Today's Reflection
Outward appearances reveal only part of a person's experience. What we see may tell us something about their circumstances, but it rarely reveals everything they are carrying.
Someone may appear confident while experiencing uncertainty, remain productive while feeling overwhelmed, or seem distant while quietly navigating something difficult.
When we assume that what is visible represents the whole truth, we risk responding to our interpretation rather than to the person before us.
Awareness invites a more compassionate approach. We can acknowledge what we observe without pretending to know what remains unseen.
A Deeper Reflection
The human mind naturally forms impressions. We notice behaviour, expressions, words and circumstances, then attempt to understand what they mean.
This process can be useful, but it becomes limiting when an impression hardens into certainty. We may begin to believe that we understand another person's experience without having genuinely listened.
A person's outward behaviour may be influenced by experiences we know little about: responsibilities, grief, uncertainty, exhaustion, personal history or circumstances they have chosen not to disclose.
Compassion does not require us to imagine or diagnose what another person might be experiencing. It asks us to recognise the limits of our knowledge and remain open to what we have not yet understood.
This openness does not mean abandoning discernment or appropriate boundaries. We can respond thoughtfully to someone's behaviour while recognising that their experience may be more complex than our initial interpretation suggests.
When certainty gives way to curiosity, our relationships can become more spacious. We begin to listen with greater care, ask more thoughtful questions and allow another person's experience to be understood on its own terms.
A Question for Today
Am I responding to what I know, or to what I have assumed?
