Not everything needs to travel with you.

As we move through life, we accumulate experiences, responsibilities, expectations and ways of thinking. Some continue to support us, while others belong to circumstances that have already changed.

Transitions become clearer when we distinguish between what still belongs to our path and what belongs to a chapter that has ended.

Moving forward does not always require acquiring something new. Sometimes it begins with recognising what we no longer need to carry.

We often imagine that progress requires addition: more knowledge, more preparation, more effort or another responsibility. Yet the capacity to move forward can also depend upon what we are willing to release.

Some burdens are obvious. Others have become so familiar that we no longer question their presence. We may continue carrying old expectations, inherited obligations or beliefs that once protected us but no longer reflect who we are becoming.

Familiarity can make these burdens feel necessary. We may mistake what we have carried for a long time for something we must continue carrying indefinitely.

Discernment invites a different question. Rather than asking only what the next stage requires, we can examine what genuinely belongs within it.

This does not mean rejecting our history or abandoning meaningful commitments. Our experiences remain part of our understanding, even when particular responsibilities, habits or identities have reached their natural conclusion.

We can honour what has shaped us without taking all of it into the future. Sometimes a lighter journey begins with a more conscious choice about what we keep.
