Today's Reflection
We hear more when we stop preparing our reply.
Listening is more than waiting for silence in which to speak. Yet in many conversations, part of our attention is already constructing an answer while the other person is still talking.
When this happens, we may hear the words without fully receiving the meaning, emotion or intention beneath them.
Deeper listening begins when we temporarily release the need to answer and allow another person's experience to reach us before deciding what it means.
A Deeper Reflection
Conversation can easily become an exchange of prepared positions. One person speaks while the other evaluates, interprets, agrees, disagrees or rehearses what should be said next.
This is understandable. The mind naturally tries to organise information quickly. It compares what it hears with previous experiences, assumptions and expectations.
But immediate interpretation can sometimes prevent genuine understanding. We may respond not to what was actually communicated, but to what we expected to hear.
Listening therefore requires a degree of inner spaciousness. We listen not only for words, but for emphasis, hesitation, emotion, context and even what may remain unspoken.
This does not mean abandoning discernment or accepting everything another person says as true. Receptivity and discernment can coexist. In fact, we often discern more accurately when we have first listened without rushing towards judgement.
Understanding frequently begins in the brief space before our response—the moment in which we allow what we have heard to settle before deciding what should come next.
A Question for Today
When I listen to others, am I trying to understand them—or preparing to respond to them?
