Discernment While Certainty Is Still Forming

Discernment is not the ability to have no doubts. It is the ability to remain present while certainty is still forming.

We often imagine that a wise decision should arrive with complete confidence. If doubt remains, we may assume that we need more information, more thinking or more time.

Yet uncertainty is not always evidence that we are unprepared. Sometimes it simply means that understanding is still developing.

Discernment allows us to remain attentive within that space without forcing ourselves into a conclusion simply to escape the discomfort of not knowing.

The desire for certainty is understandable. Certainty appears to offer security: a clear direction, a definite answer and freedom from the possibility of making the wrong choice.

But many meaningful decisions do not arrive with that degree of clarity. We may know some things, assume others and remain genuinely uncertain about the rest.

Problems arise when these categories become confused. An assumption can begin to feel like a fact, while an unknown can be interpreted as evidence that something is wrong.

Discernment asks us to separate what we know from what we believe, fear, anticipate or simply do not yet understand.

This creates space around uncertainty. Instead of immediately eliminating doubt, we can observe what becomes clearer when assumptions are no longer treated as facts.

Wisdom does not always rush towards certainty. Sometimes it becomes precise enough to recognise what remains unknown.
