Today's Reflection
Stillness is not the absence of movement. It is the presence of inner stability.
Life does not have to become quiet before the mind can become clear. Circumstances continue to change, responsibilities remain, and uncertainty periodically returns.
The deeper contemplative practice is learning not to make inner equilibrium entirely dependent upon external conditions.
A steady centre does not prevent change. It allows us to meet change without being carried away by every reaction it produces.
A Deeper Reflection
Stillness is sometimes misunderstood as withdrawal from activity. Yet genuine inner stillness can exist in the midst of movement, responsibility and change.
When our sense of equilibrium depends entirely upon circumstances being comfortable or predictable, peace becomes fragile. Every unexpected event has the power to disturb it.
Contemplative practice gradually develops another possibility: the capacity to observe movement without immediately becoming identified with every reaction it creates.
This does not mean becoming passive or indifferent. We continue to respond, make decisions and fulfil our responsibilities. The difference is that action begins from a steadier inner centre.
In this way, stillness becomes less about controlling the environment and more about cultivating the quality of consciousness with which we meet it.
The world may continue to move around us. Inner stability allows us to participate fully without allowing every movement to determine our inner state.
A Question for Today
Where am I waiting for external circumstances to become calmer before allowing myself to experience greater inner steadiness?
